My Pumpkin is done!

Wednesday, October 30th, 2002

Today I carved my first pumpkin in a long time. I drew a template on paper , tacked it on and started carving. I also did my first skin peeling, for the eye, nose and teeth. The lighting is done via xmas lights (purple, halloween lights to be exact)

Mole no more

Wednesday, October 30th, 2002

I went and saw a dermatologist about my birth marks. I’m having them cut off in early December. He says they are ok, but it is best to be safer than sorry, and I agree. They will be cut off, I get sewed up, yuck. Maybe I’ll have em take pictures hehe.

That will do it for this year’s self improvement. Braces, a little bit of weight loss, my moles gone. Now to finish TK3 and get back to working and finish the self work!

Screen burn in

Wednesday, October 30th, 2002

My tv is finally showing screen burn in. The problem came from using the 4:3 mode with bars down the sides. Now in full screen mode, you can see the sides are darker.

I was expecting this, so I am using the full screen modes to see if time will even it out. If not, I’ll be ready for a new set anyway in a couple of years.

ICQ to talk to AIM

Tuesday, October 29th, 2002

Since AOL owns both AIM and ICQ, they are finally going to allow users of both services to talk with each other.

I hope this means Apple will get to update iChat to talk to ICQ as well. I love Fire, but it would be nice to have most of my users in iChat.

Da Weekend

Sunday, October 27th, 2002

I spent the weekend playing EverQuest. Am now 25% into level 55, whoot! Tomorrow it is back to ‘work’ on TK3, trying to finish this project up once and for all. I have sure learned a lot working on it!

I want to see Jackass – I know, I know, haha. But it just looks sooo dumb!

Last week, Maggie, Sarah and I went to see The Ring. I was disappointed. It didn’t live up to the hype for me, and I spent most of the time looking at the framing of shots.

The World Series is weapping up tonight – Two great ex-Dodgers managing, so whomever wins I will be happy for them.

Still trying to learn how to type properly. Old habits are hard to break!

Charlie how’s your angels get down like that?

Mac Camp here I come

Thursday, October 17th, 2002

This weekend I will be co-teaching a class on iMovie with Terry Shellenberger at PMUG’s Mac Camp. I am very excited and lucky that Terry is doing most of the work.

The class is an experiment – An entire cabin is dedicated to the class and the class uses the entire weekend, whereas Mac Camp classes normally only last 3 hours.

We’re going to be teaching shooting, moving data, editing and distrubuting movies made with iMovie.

Wish us luck!

10.2.2 to have JFS?

Tuesday, October 15th, 2002

Slashdot comments on an article stating that Mac OS X 10.2.2 will have an optional journaled file system.

At a speed hit of 10-15%, the JFS will give the system a file transaction history. BeOS used this and it was GREAT. After a crash, a 10 second rebuild is all that was needed to fix the disk.

Oh yeah, yeah, the same guy that wrote the Be’s JFS wrote this one!

Mooving way to make power

Tuesday, October 15th, 2002

A farmer in Salem, Oregon is part of an experiment to turn cow manure into electricity. Sponsored by PGE (Portland General Electric), the dairy’s 300 some cows can generate 100 kilowatts per day, enough to power 60+ homes.

Another test will be happening in eastern oregon, where the areas 4000+ cows will be used to generate power for 2700+ homes.

Moo!

Confessions of a Mac to PC convert

Monday, October 14th, 2002

Geez, Microsoft can’t even be original in it’s own advertising:

Microsoft ripoff advertising

Gotta love the quotes:

“AppleWorks (previously called ClarisWorks) pales in comparison to Microsoft Office XP.”

Pales in price comparison, too.

“The key to getting hardware to work with your computer is to have the correct drivers, the software that enables your PC to communicate with your hardware. Windows XP or your computer manufacturer will pre-install most of them. If not, go to the Web site of the company that makes the peripheral you want to attach to find the most current drivers.”

Ok, the fact that they had to add a section entitled “A Final Note about Hardware” should be clue enough, but this sort of disclaimer? What more can I say but:

“My name is Janie Porche, and I saved Christmas!”
