If you find Safari surfing it slow…

Wednesday, September 17th, 2003

If you find Safari surfing it slow, it might be your DNS servers. I think Comcast’s are pretty slow, and Safari was just getting worse and worse (lock ups, etc) so I decided to install BIND and set my DNS server to 127.0.0.1

Wow, Safari is quick now! No more lock ups, spinning cursors etc. I’ll keep reporting here if it comes back.

I already had BIND 8.x on my system so I had to change the configure (with a prefix) to get it to make into the proper location for 9.x. I had a BIND startup script also (not sure if I made that or the make did) so I have all of the steps if you need them.

In the meantime, Apple can figure out why Safari is so DNS dependent where other browsers, like Camino, don’t seem to be.

This is why I am no longer an Apple gen 1 supporter

Why don’t I have a G5 yet? As Simeon and I have discussed, Apple has burned people too many times when you buy the brand new thing early. I’m letting someone else debug this stuff. Check this out about the new Apple keyboard and mouse from Macintouch:

Michael Blake pointed out a surprising compatibility problem with Apple’s new Bluetooth keyboard and mouse: Referencing the new Apple Bluetooth Mouse and Keyboard, you might want to warn your readers about a compatibility issue. Those of us who ran out and bought the Bluetooth adapter when it was first launched are going to be out of luck (or have thinner wallets!) if we want to use the new accessories…. The Apple Store has this warning: Important: Requires a Bluetooth enabled Macintosh (either built-in or using the qualified D-Link DBT-120 USB Bluetooth Adapter (older D-Link DWB-120M adapters are not supported). Mac OS X, v10.2.6 or higher required.

I’m sorry, your career as a cashier is over…

The Evil that is Krispy Kreme

Tuesday, September 9th, 2003

I’m driving home at 3:15am, a little hungry and think, “Hmm, I might as well stop and see where the new Krispy Kreme is off 26 and Cornell.” So I get off the freeway and see it ahead, and the lights are on! Crap. So I pull in the drive through and sure enough, the drive through is open 24 hours. $8.18 later I have donuts and bad coffee. I didn’t need sleep tonight I guess.

Apple posts backup 2 beta

Wednesday, September 3rd, 2003

Head on over to .mac and pick up your copy. According to the site:

Backup 2 Public Beta lets you select any folder on any hard drive as a destination for your backup—use external FireWire hard drives, network servers, or even an iPod. You can also schedule these backups for an extra measure of protection.

Backup 2 Public Beta expands CD and DVD support beyond Apple-supplied internal optical drives to many third-party drives. This version even lets you mix different optical disk types in a single backup set.

When you use the Back up to Drive mode, you need to click Set… to pick a destination for the backup. You will be selecting a name for your backup and the location where it will be saved, such as on an external FireWire hard drive.
