Chain Reaction

Tuesday, September 7th, 2004

Chain Reaction (1996) was another action vehicle for Keanu Reeves. Even with Morgan Freeman, the bad guy with a soft spot, it was a horrible movie. As the movie did, twice, big bomb.

So long, Furyan, you served me well, and sucked my life away

Tuesday, September 7th, 2004

My everquest account was cancelled today. While i had not played in over a year, in the previous 5 years I spent far too much of my free time playing that game. Never a hard core gamer, Furyan never made it past 59 nor got his holy Steed, but he had a wonderful time making friends, making up silly stories and crawling dungeons.

The game, while evil incarnate, was fun at times, but mainly for the social aspects. Sitting on my ass grinding for 10 hours on a Saturday was not fun at all and these games need to learn that. But as I said, I’ll miss Teaka and the likes as we always had a grand time together.

I’ll never forget falling off the boat in ocean of tears on my first weekend, spending 9 1/2 hours trying to get my body back. Nor Kahles and Iueelyen coming to rescue us from the Dvovlarg Dogs after that asshole whats-his-name lead us in there.

Or Bladeth and our trip into Runnyeye, where I was the last one standing cuz I sucked so much they left me for last. Or losing my surname because of Sony’s lameass naming policies. My one good trip into Hate, or when I got a new twinked weapon from Kahles.

I’ll remember taking on Gornaire and getting one swing in (a miss of course) and dying. Being a dwarf sucked as the elves would peel me on rocks constantly during a run.

I’ll not forget how useless Ecce seemed, but we still managed to pull off some cool stuff. Or having Jobue go linkdead in Mistmoore and waiting hours for him to come back. Or Kahles and I soloing Sir Lucan for my (second) soulfire attempt.

Was good times, at times.

Netflix via Tivo??

Monday, September 6th, 2004

This might be the thing that makes me buy a HD DirecTivo. MSNBC is reporting that TiVo and Netflix are getting in bed together. If you have a network based TiVo (I don’t) you’ll be able to download movies from NetFlix directly instead of waiting for the DVDs to show up.

If the movies are in the normal DVD quality and with an HD DirecTivo I can output progressive images to the TV, my DVD player will become much less useful.

L’ Avventura

Sunday, September 5th, 2004

Avventura, L’ (1960) is an award winning Italian film from 1960. I’d seen this movie in the Criterion catalog since the first year I worked at Voyager in 1988 but never got around to seeing it.

it is a bit slow, but the scenery is great. The plot is not obvious as you are taken through getting to know the characters at a good pace so nothing becomes obvious too quickly, unlike today’s movies.

The Adventure, a story of life, the greatest adventure of all and how in short periods of time, life can change dramatically but in the end, when you least expect it or even deserve it, compassion may come your way.

Lilo and Stitch

Sunday, September 5th, 2004

Lilo & Stitch (2002) was cute, but I just can’t have the adoration for some of the new Disney stuff as I have for the classics. I was yawning. Give me Pinocchio any day :)

A Clockwork Orange

Sunday, September 5th, 2004

Alright, Clockwork Orange, A (1971) was amazing, creepy, freaky and just odd.

Artistically the movie was fantastic. I suppose it was an interesting statement on humanity, draped in sexual violence. Kubrick had a think for the sexual subculture it seems.

This really is a must see, and I think I’ll have to watch it again, just like 2001.

Network

Sunday, September 5th, 2004

I’d heard some of the famous lines from Network (1976) many times, such as “I’m mad as hell and I’m not going to take it anymore.”

What is scary is how accurate the film was in predicting how attached to the tube we’d become and now brain dead a society we’d become. The current elections and how much weight people put in television campaign ads is evidence of that.

Meaning of Life

Sunday, September 5th, 2004

I finally was able to see Meaning of Life, The (1983) all the way through. I love Python but I’d always watch this late and fall asleep. I think it was the sketch nature of the movie.

I can’t say it is my favorite of their works but at least I fully understand the ferocity of the vomiting scene now :)

Misery

Sunday, September 5th, 2004

Wow, I had never gotten around to seeing this and no wonder Kathy Bates got pegged as a psycho. She really owned the role of Annie Wilkes in Misery (1990).

James Caan did a fine role also, but it was Bates who stole the show. What a creepy, creepy performance.

Anyone care to kill off Misery now?

The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen

Sunday, September 5th, 2004

Saw League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, The (2003) on HBO last week. It was better than I had thought it would be and has inspired me to read “The picture of Dorian Grey” I found the size of the Nautilus fascinating and I am sure it is not due to any phallic reference.

Capt. Nemo was a total ass kicker. Connery did his usual wonderful role and the cast of other “gentlemen” (including one not so gentlewoman) was pretty well done. The plot was fairly dumb, but I was in the mood to look past that and enjoy the vague literary references and have a fun time.

Peter Pan

Sunday, September 5th, 2004

Believe it or not, Disneyland freak me had never seen the original Peter Pan (1953), as least not to my recollection. So I saw it. Tinkerbell was a bitch! Wow what a bunch of jealous women on that island. No wonder so many guys never want to reach Never Never Land with a woman. LOL.

In the end, Tink made amends. I understand the references on the ride now and can relate to the kids better :)

it never ceases to amaze me at how dark Disney’s original works were. Have to love it :)

M

Sunday, September 5th, 2004

I rented Criterion’s M (1931) not really knowing what to expect. I enjoyed it, but it was a tad long and slow. However, for a 1931 film, I thought the acting was quite good and it had that Frankenstein feel, you know, the audio crackling, missing frames, etc. I really dig that.

The movie was about a serial pedophile/killer, played by Peter Lorre. That guy is creepy in English, he was uber creepy in German. The town takes things into its own hands as the bumbling police can’t find a clue. The ending I’ll leave for you.

The Experiment

Sunday, September 5th, 2004

Experiment, Das (2001) movie was great - German origin, subtitles, about an experiment to simulate a prison, using volunteers off the street. Acting was well done, a tad predictable, but thoroughly enjoyable.

Canvas inkjet paper

Sunday, September 5th, 2004

This is so cool. I picked up some Office Depot canvas inkjet paper and printed out the TIFF scan of my Haunted Mansion sketch. It came out incredible!

I’m going to mount it in a frame with two other art pieces of mine that i have yet to create. I bought it with glass, but I am thinking the canvas should be displayed without glass? What do you think?

Goths at Disneyland explained

Wednesday, September 1st, 2004

Sabina and I saw a ton of goths at Disneyland last Sunday. Here is the explanation.

Jon Hicks creates new BBEdit Icon

Jon Hicks of Firefox icon fame has created a new BBEdit 8 icon. Much nicer in my opinion!
