Most Windows users have XP and there isn't a "direct path" from XP to 7. Yummy.

If you are buying a new PC with 7 preinstalled, cool. Upgrading your current XP PC to 7, haul out the Excedrin.

The 'install without a product key, then install again as an upgrade' is also how Vista worked. I had to use it to upgrade a Windows 2000 installation. I posted to a windows-oriented technical about about how counterintuitive and silly the process had been and got BLASTED by some windows gurus because it should have been OBVIOUS to do it this way and anyway once it worked it was STUPID of me to suggest that any alternative solution would have been better when the problem was only my own inability to follow directions.

Sure.
