Ariens Lawnmower

Thursday, March 29th, 2007

I also bought a Ariens Lawnmower from WashCo today for $399. They love these machines, long life, decent controls and let me tell you, I did the entire yard, back and front, in 3 bags, where the electric Black and Decker took 6 for just the front and part of the back. The Ariens does a much better job of mulching and I love the powered wheels!

Mantis rototiller

Wednesday, March 28th, 2007

People who know me know I am not much of a gardener. I kill lawns frequently. I want that to change, however, so I am adding a Mantis to my wish list.

I think I can use this to aerate, thatch up the moss and maybe even till over the weed patch.

Update: Ooh a place about 1/4 mile from me carries these and is about the same price as online! Too bad they are out of the aerator/thatcher I’d want LOL.

Update: I bought the 4 stroke Honda model today for $399. It broke in 10 mins, the fuel line snapped at the carburetor. Ouch. But they repaired it immediately, and I could not find any other reports of this happening, so I went back to work. Very exhausting but what a great little machine. I need the tine cleaning tool - that is a job and a half!

Tire Inflator / Air Compressor

Wednesday, March 28th, 2007

I’d love to find a nice, small air compressor for mainly inflating car tires, bike tires, fit balls, etc. Sears has a nice one it seems for $30, but it is 6-8 business days away.

Does anyone in the Portland area have a compressor they love?

Update: I ended up buying a 12v inflator from Sears

Harmony 890 Universal Remote

Wednesday, March 28th, 2007

I used to keep a wish list on my old, old site for myself, relatives, etc. Why not use a Wordpress category for that?

So the first item on my wish list is a Harmony 890 Universal Remote. I own a Harmony 676 now and the buttons are starting to wear out after years of service. I’d also like the RF transmitting to IR repeater feature.

Harmony Remotes are great. Just yesterday my brother helped my Mom buy a new Sony DVD player. A few changes to the website and they were watching movies just as they had with their old, dying DVD player.

Update! Amazon has the harmony for $238 right now!

Update Ok I ordered one. They even gave me a free month of Amazon Prime, so overnight shipping was $4. heh

Designing a user experience

Wednesday, March 21st, 2007

There is a reason we do user testing on products, to make sure that no obvious issues are overlooked. The United States Post Office didn’t do a full job with regards to their otherwise wonderful self-service kiosks.

I had to mail something to a friend in Germany so I go to the post office, after hours, and go to the self help kiosk. I put my manilla enveope on the scale and tell the computer International, then Germany. It takes my money, prints my stamp and asks me if I need anything else. No, so I affix my stamp and put my envelope in the OPEN receptacle and then close it.

THEN, THEN there is a sticker on the previously hidden part of the receptacle that says “For Domestic only, take international to a postal worker!” What the heck is this!?

I mean, come on, what person assumed that the receptacle would be CLOSED all of the time and that people would even read its stickers FIRST

There is a perfectly working screen that KNOWS I just bought a international stamp, that KNOWS the post office is CLOSED and it should have WARNED me regardlessly so I would not drop the damn thing in the open receptacle!

Now I have no idea what they will do with this thing and their phones are closed, too. Grr.

Please pardon the dust!

As some of you might have seen, I have been working on my website, moving it from Movable Type into WordPress. Its been fairly smooth with the exception of the URLs for the podcasts and RSS feeds. In trying to make that work as it used to, I’ve left the server in a broken state from time to time over the past 24 hours.

Thank you for your patience - I’m almost done!

Be sure to check out the new look and feel.

Happy Holidays!

I had a fun weekend!

Sunday, December 17th, 2006

I spent the weekend with Elizabeth, her brother and his girlfriend. We watched Clerks, then Star Wars Episode IV (the dvds look great!), played cards, had dinner (quite scrumptious).

Charles called to inform me that a power sub station a mile away had blown a transformer, burning 20,000 gallons of mineral oil and causing 50,000 to lose power. He was out of power, so we decided to just crash at Tom and Kath’s.

This am we watched some Family Guy season 1, then went to the new McMenanims in North Portland which used to be a mortuary. Service was alright, food was ok, but they just opened so we’ll give them a go again later.

Following lunch we went to Vancouver Mall for glow in the dark golf which was quite fun. Tom owned the game so there shall be a rematch!

Following more family guy and general lazing around, Elizabeth and I headed home to discover my power had never gone out, as the G5 was still running and I had disconnected the UPS’ usb cable. So either the power never went out or the power was only out for 15 mins or so.

A good weekend!

Fizzgig is dumb

Monday, December 4th, 2006

Apparently, fizzgig’s tumble down the stairs a few weeks back broke his speaker. He no longer beeps :(

Oh well, he still cleans very well. Its amazing how much dirt he picks up each week!

New couch!

Sunday, December 3rd, 2006

After searching seven stores, finally ordered a couch to replace my lazboy, which has broken and had cushion failure. So gone are the reclining and center console, but in are more elegance, much better construction, and cushions with springs in them, topped with down feathers!

The pattern of the fabric looks like this:

Meet Fizzgig

Wednesday, November 15th, 2006

Elizabeth named my roomba “Fizzgig” from The Dark Crystal :)

Roomba takes a tumble

Tuesday, November 14th, 2006

hahah roomba just fell down the stairs, bin came out, and it said “oh oh” in beeps

Guess the stair detector isn’t so hot. hmm

Roomba rocks!

Tuesday, November 14th, 2006

So I charged the room, moved some chairs, unplugged my laptop and set roomba to work.

It rocks!

Ok its not a replacement for a full vac. But on a maintenance cleanup, it does a really good job.

It runs around banging into things, going under chairs, etc. I moved most chairs into the kitchen and it still went under them in there, getting crap off the kitchen floor.

It didn’t like the floor vent too much.

My discovery SE from woot.com came with the nicer caster wheel.

The roomba got stuck under the backside of my couch because the corner is slanted and it wedged the roomba so the wheels were off the floor. The roomba cycled 10 times and got free. Later, it hit the same spot, got wedged and abandoned cleaning.

I stuck it in the middle of the living room and did a spot clean to get what it missed.

This is what the roomba picked up in 45 minutes:

roomba dirt

Update: I will make a time lapse video of the roomba working. Also, I plugged in its home base charger, powered it up, pressed SPOT + CLEAN at the same time and it beeped, spun, and docked itself for charging!

Doug Morris says I’m a thief!

Monday, November 13th, 2006

Yeah, that’s right. Doug Morris, one of the music industry’s enlightened ones, of Universal Music, says “These devices are just repositories for stolen music, and they all know it”

Screw you, Mr. Morris. Screw Microsoft for caving into your licensing, too. What did Microsoft do, you ask? They agreed to pay Universal $1 for every Zune sold. Oh I’m sorry, you’re paying Universal $1 if you buy a Zune. Universal gets 50 cents an the remaining 50 cents is distributed to all of their artists equally. YEAH, RIGHT.

Oh and you don’t get any free music after paying your Universal tax, do you? Of course not, because you’re a thief and you have been found guilty by Doug Morris and the Microsoft court of appeals agrees. By purchasing a Zune you have signed the plea bargain in admitting you are a thief.

Next up? Who knows, maybe Doug’s buddies from the RIAA might be sending you a letter. You’re a thief after all!

When you open a franchise

Thursday, November 9th, 2006

be the first in Oregon and do it in the rain, when people are fed up and want to get outside.

We have a Sonic Burger now, first one in oregon, so Elizabeth and I went by last night. They have drive in stalls, like the 50s. Two rows of cars backed up, the parking lot for Kohl’s was coned off, one row for drive thru, one for the stalls, about 15-25 cars in each row.

We went for Sushi.

Bush actually makes a great joke

Reporter - “I wonder if you have metrics on your reading contest with Mr. Rove”

Pres. Bush - “I’m losing - I was obviously working harder on the campaign than he was. ok, he’s a faster reader”
