Archive for the 'Safari' CategoryAdobe releases public beta of Flash 9 for intel MacsFriday, June 30th, 2006A day after I posted to their technote saying ‘the best way to improve this technote is to ship the intel version,” Adobe delivers. You can thank me later. Safari Smart FoldersSunday, July 4th, 2004Now that Tiger is bringing BeOS like search to the entire OS, it would be cool if this worked for Safari bookmarks. I can never find them and I have 1000s and well folders suck (as Steve said so himself) But the problem with bookmarks is that there is little meta data in them, just the URL. So I was thinking that Safari could keep a database of site meta data (either pulled from the page or the meta data tags, or both, whatever) so when I bookmark something, that pages (and maybe pages on the same site?) are cached if you will, keyword wise. Then I can make a smart folder like “Golf and portland” and have all “bookmarks” that relate to those keywords show up! This is better than just scanning and keeping every page - We have google for that. this only does it for pages I have already actively shown interest in. As a side note, even if Safari does not do it, a third party app could scan Safari’s bookmarks and do it also , but then the page gets loaded twice, there is lag in scan time, etc, ie I think it would be nice if Apple just did it right YES thank you SafariMonday, February 2nd, 2004Finally, we can tab between UI elements, even popup menus, and arrow keys work, typing works, YES. YES. YES. I feel like a disheveled Windows user who finally got desktop icons working properly. Safari closer but no cigarMonday, February 2nd, 2004Apple released a new Java and Safari today. I can finally open up a chat at matchdoctor (they use Digichat) but the cursor is in constant spin of death and clicks don’t work. people wonder why I hate Java. Go figure. Safari is slower than Mozilla opening MovableTypeFriday, November 7th, 2003Safari seems slower than Mozilla for opening my movabletype edit pages - Something for Apple to work on. Maybe it is the server interaction with the cgis that Safari is waiting too long for. Actually this seems to be related to blocking popup windows for some reason - turn it off and Safari is fast again. MovableType Bookmarklets can be made to work in Safari!Friday, November 7th, 2003Bookmarklets like:
still do nothing in Safari, whereas they work in Mozilla. However, you can head over to this site for a fix! Safari auto-decompress seems to handle Panther zips improperlySunday, October 26th, 2003This note comes from Curt who pointed out that this file: http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/azureus/Azureus-2.0.3.2-OSX.zip?download Why Can’t Safari store cached icons elsewhere?Sunday, October 12th, 2003Why must Safari store it’s cached favicons in ~/Library/Safari? This is the folder backed up by Apple’s own Backup and it adds a ton of time to back up useless data. These icons should be saved in ~/Library/Caches/Safari/Icons/ Steve Safari 1.0v85.5 brings fixes, but not all of themMonday, September 22nd, 2003Apple released Mac OS X 10.2.8 today and along with it a new version of Safari, 1.0v85.5 (which shipped in 10.2.7) This new version now renders Toms Hardware much better than it did just a scant 8 hours ago (I had to use Mozilla) The java based applets I use (Digichat and the speed tools at broadbandreports.com) still don’t work - let’s hope those get fixed shortly! (Both involve applets opening windows with other applets in them, in the latter’s case, the results of the test) Good job Apple, keep the fixes coming! If you find Safari surfing it slow…Wednesday, September 17th, 2003If you find Safari surfing it slow, it might be your DNS servers. I think Comcast’s are pretty slow, and Safari was just getting worse and worse (lock ups, etc) so I decided to install BIND and set my DNS server to 127.0.0.1 Wow, Safari is quick now! No more lock ups, spinning cursors etc. I’ll keep reporting here if it comes back. I already had BIND 8.x on my system so I had to change the configure (with a prefix) to get it to make into the proper location for 9.x. I had a BIND startup script also (not sure if I made that or the make did) so I have all of the steps if you need them. In the meantime, Apple can figure out why Safari is so DNS dependent where other browsers, like Camino, don’t seem to be. Safari 1.0 ships - Still needs Java workMonday, June 23rd, 2003Apple shipped Safari today! I am not sure what is improved over beta 2, but I know they did not fix Java. Java still opens this console window up (that can never close) and Digichat’s java chat client does not work either. A note to the Safari teamSaturday, June 14th, 2003IE is gone. Yay! What cracks me up is their whining about Safari having insider info. Yeah, that is why Camino’s java support is better than Safari at the moment? MS never ceases to amaze me in their gall, attitude and just utter brashness. I hope this affords the Safari and Camino teams the energy to go for it. OmniWeb is still out for me. They still have a custom plugin format and I’m sorry, it’s hard enough getting plugins as is. Maybe Safari, Camino and OmniWeb can come together with a kick butt, late bound plugin architecture, standardize on it, make great docs and make it SO EASY for people to make plugins on the mac it would be stupid to not do so. Carpe Diem, folks. This is your moment. So long, IE!Friday, June 13th, 2003See you on the Safari! MS drops Mac IE development. Not like there had been any lately. And this a day after I sign off the Mac-IE-Talk mailing list. Am I good or what?? MS will now use the Windows only browser to force crappy non-standard codes to us.. Great. Where is the DOJ when you really need em? When will people learn? Yay! A new Safari!Monday, April 14th, 2003And it has tabs and autofill! I found that if you command-click on a folder of urls in your address bar, it opens them like the Camino grouped tabs! This is the same as the “Open in tabs” menu item at the bottom of the list. However, Safari does not have Open in Tabs for each submenu, so it makes grouping tabbed groups not very doable. Also, you cannot command-click folders in the bookmark list to open them in tabs either. It turns out that you can control-click on folders in the right-hand pane of the bookmarks panel and get a “open in tabs” menu option, but you cannot control-click folders in the left hand panel (the top level list) Boo! I don’t like such inconsistency. so in other words, Safari needs an “Open in tabs” menu item for each folder you open, be it in a menu or not and control-click should be item consistent (a folder is a folder is a folder to the user) I still cannot log into Salon Personals. www.magelo.com downloads a page vs. loading it. Update: The auto fill works very nicely. I turned on the option in the Preferences to have it store site usernames and passwords also. I like that Apple integrated the concept of passwords and auto fill into one place, making it easier to manage and comprehend for new users. Update: eq.castersrealm.com works now! We need a new SafariWednesday, April 9th, 2003It has been so long I am forgetting what bugs I have reported or not. Can we please have a new build soon? Safari Find BrokenThursday, February 20th, 2003Safari does not seem to like to find text in pages with frames. Anyone else seen this? Staggered WindowsWednesday, February 12th, 2003I don’t like the way Safari staggers new windows. they often end up with the scroll bars off the right edge of the screen, etc. I’d like an option to turn off staggering and just let me figure it out (or open new windows as tabs would be nice hehe) Ok this is great!Wednesday, February 12th, 2003I had just not tried this, but I drug my Dating folder tab (not interested in dating at the moment <g>) down into the bookmark window and it worked! Very nice, seemless integration of the bookmarks. Safari b60 NotesWednesday, February 12th, 2003I was just complaining to Simeon that Verizon Wireless only works with IE. My ortho changed their certificate - I wonder if this “self-signed” certificate support will allow Verizon Wireless to work….. Yep! I am not sure I like self-signed certificates, but it works now. Windows no longer appear under the dock if the dock is on the left side of the screen. However a wide window will show under the dock if the dock is on the right side of the screen. (window should be resized, or maybe shifted left?) Shoot, popup windows still show under the dock. I think Safari should catch this and offset the window. Speed is still great, scrolling with my new MS Wireless Optical Blue is better it seems for some reason. Smoother. From this cursory look, a great update! Apple posts Safari updateWednesday, February 12th, 2003Available via Software Update, the notes state: The Safari Update 2-12-03 improves the compatibility with popular web sites based on Safari user feedback, further improves the performance of loading web pages and Flash content, adds support for XML, increases standards conformance and delivers improved application stability. The update also enables access to web sites that offer self-signed security certificates. |
