Q: What is the safest way to use Classic? Updated: 2001-04-08

A: We have found that if you manually launch Classic, instead of launching an application which then launches Classic, things go much smoother. All classic related hard lockups have come when trying to launch a classic app via the dock while classic was not already running.
Use Apple Menu->System Preferences->Classic to start classic up, at login, if classic crashes, etc.

Q: What tips do you have for using the same 9.1 System Folder as for Classic? Updated: 2001-04-08

A: We're currently looking into using Conflict Catcher 8.0.8, which can select your extension set based on the OS that is running (either 9.x or Classic). However, we have experienced a (seemingly common) problem with the C.C. serial number being forgotten as you switch between OS 9.x and classic, thus making C.C. useless.

So, in the meantime, use Extension Manager to make two sets, one with your normal 9.1 extensions, and another labeled 'OS X.' Then when booting, hold down space bar and choose the proper extension set. We suggest turning off any extenions in the Classic set you do not need, such as Apple Audio Extension, etc. In fact, we started with the 9.1 all set and added the Epson print drivers, then turned off Apple Audio Extension.

A: Fear not. Thanks to a MacInTouch reader, we have an answer. The file is locked! Yes it seems that the Finder locking is in a layer lower than the Unix POSIX layer, so not even root can muck with files that are locked. Simply select the file in the Finder, choose Show Info from the File menu, and uncheck "Locked"

A: We have seen this too - We just take the URL or the text in the field, hilite it and drag it to the desktop to make a URL or text clipping, then drag it into the app we want the text. If the app does not support drag and drop of clippings, drag it into TextEdit then copy from there.

A: Stuffit Expander 6.0.1 is a Carbon application and can be used by both MacOS X and 9.1. We deleted all other copies of Stuffit Expander by using Sherlock to search for 'Expander.' Now we only have one copy of Stuffit Expander on our system.

A: This happens from time to time it seems. Here is one trick. Always have Terminal running, Set it to launch when you log in via (here) you can just close the window that opens. Then if you lose your cursor, command-tab until terminal is selected in the dock, release and terminal will come forward. This resets the cursor.
