Wow! I have not set her up yet, but Peri and I have opened up the case and checked out the internals to make sure its all there.
First thing I noticed was Apple learned from the scratched iMac plastics, and all the rub points are covered in a thin layer of static plastic. Every little white apple, all the blue on the front, the top, etc. Very nice!
Handles - What a concept. Apple, you are the best!
The Door - Hot damn its nice!
This is the last entry from the 8600, knock on wood. I'm shutting down and setting scully up!
Jan 14, 1999, 11:00pm PST
Scully has shipped! I'm not sure why its so fast, considering Neal Pann's experience, who ordered his G3 a day before me and has had his order returned to stage 1, being told by Apple that "they were not even shipping yet and it might be another week before they do, and it would be another two weeks before mine would be custom configured."
I'm not complaining, mind you.
Jan 11, 1999, 3:00pm PST - I just got an email. :)
"Dear Apple Customer,
Your order is being processed. The following products will be shipped...." (Deleted the contents of the order)
So I checked the site and sure enough, the order is at the factory!
Jan 8, 1999 - Yes I purchased a new white and blue Power Macintosh G3. I ordered it from the Apple Online Store on Jan 6. Apple has said it will arrive in "2-3 weeks." I think I will chronicle the process here for you. Lets see how well Apple does!
I ordered via the web. It was a fairly nice experience. The server was quick and responsive. My only gripes were that I did not get a delivery guestimate online, nor did I get a total for the bill immediately. That came today, 2 days later.
The machine will go through five steps. First, "reviewing" is where its at now. Next, the order goes to the factory, then it is built, then it is packaged and lastly, shipped.
I can track the status of the order via the Apple store, and I will report here when the machine makes it from stage to stage.
Her name is Scully, named after the X Files character. I chose this name based on the fact that the machine looks like an X from the side, its almost alien like, its a very sensible value for the money, and, as we Mac users have known for a long time, with regards to which is the better computer, "The truth is out there."
Check back for updates on Scully!
Jan 6, 1999, 7:30pm PST - Scully ordered (This entry added to give a true sense of time to this process)

© Copyright 1997-2002 Geeks R Us.
